HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - By Janelle Guerrero
A new interactive iPad app designed for children to learn more about the hokule'a will be launching Saturday.
The first "appisode" of "Malama Honua My Voyage" will teach kids about the tradition of voyaging practiced by ancient Polynesians that is still being used today.
App users will learn how to gather materials for their canoe and go on a trip to the mountains through video stories and interactive activities.
Manu, their animated guide, will help users take steps to become a "junior navigator."
The completion of the app was the result of an 18-month collaboration between the Ho'omalamalama Foundation, the Polynesian Voyaging Society, and the Malama Honua Public Charter School.
Users may purchase the app for an introductory price of ninety-nine cents. Proceeds will go to further the respective educational missions of the three non-profit organizations.
If the first appisode is successful, the Ho'omalamalama Foundation will produce more that will follow the hokule'a throughout its worldwide journey.
Teacher and parent guides are available on malamahonua.com.
