PAIA, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A fatal vehicle crash in Paia closed Baldwin Avenue for several hours Tuesday night.
Maui police said one person died and one was critically injured after the crash happened around 5:30 p.m.
Police said a blue 2011 Nissan Altima sedan was traveling east on Baldwin Avenue when it collided into a white 2015 Tesla Model S sedan that was traveling west on Baldwin Avenue.
The female driver of the Nissan Altima was pronounced dead at the scene. She was identified as 20-year-old Sydnee L. Apao, of Haiku.
Apao's front seat passenger, a 19-year-old female from Paia, was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition. The driver of the Tesla, a 65-year-old woman from Makawao, was taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the drivers of both cars were not wearing seat belts at the time. The woman who was critically injured was also not wearing her seat belt.
Police said it's still not clear whether speed, drugs and alcohol were factors.
Baldwin Avenue, between Mahiko Street and Paia Mill Road, was closed for several hours following the crash.
Police are still continuing their investigation.
