HILO, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A Big Island police officer fatally shot a man Monday afternoon at a home in Hilo.

Police responded to the home off West Kawailani Street after a report of a disturbance. Officers who arrived at the scene found a man with a knife and a pit bull. The man had apparently chased paramedics into their vehicle.

One officer fired several shots, killing the man and the pit bull.

On Tuesday, police identified the man as Kalyp Allen Rapoza, 25, of Hilo.

Police are investigating what led up the shooting.

The officer who discharged his firearm has been with the Hawaii Police Department for three years. He's been placed on administrative leave, as is department policy.
