On almost a daily basis, fire crews rescue lost or injured hikers. Now there is a new website designed to lure people away from unsafe and illegal trails.
Hawaiii's Na Ala Hele Trails and Access Program launched its site on Friday with a new look and features to guide hikers to safer trails in Hawaii.
Users may allow the site to know their location and a map will pop up showing which hiking spots are nearest. It also shows the map of other trails throughout the state.
In addition, the Na Ala Hele staff have been uploading photos, trail features, and points of interest onto the new site.
The Na Ala Hele program teamed up with the Hawai'i Information Consortium (HIC) to revamp the site and make it mobile-friendly.
The updated site launched just in time for National Trails Day, which celebrates the popularity of hiking and the thousands of volunteers who maintain trails across the country.
