TAVARUA, FIJI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii surfer Bethany Hamilton caught some good waves in Fiji.

Hamilton beat out some of the world’s best female surfers on Sunday at the Fiji Women’s Pro to move forward to the quarterfinals of the 2016 Women’s Samsung Galaxy World Surf League (WSL) Championship tour.

Australian surfers Tyler Wright, current world number one, and six-time WSL champion Stephanie Gilmore were eliminated, as Hamilton advanced to the next round in what the league describes as the “biggest upset of the season.”

Hamilton, despite losing her arm in a shark attack when she was only 13, has continued professional surfing and entered the contest with a wildcard entry.

“I have so much respect for everyone on tour. I have been dreaming of surfing and competing here, so I was excited to receive a wildcard entry into this event,” Hamilton said. “Even after losing my arm, I am still doing everything I’ve hoped I could do with my future and even more.”
