HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Veteran jazz singer Jimmy Borges won four awards at the 39th annual Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, including Entertainer of the Year, the only category voted on by the public.

Until Saturday, Borges had never won a Hoku.

His eponymous album, released last year, won Hokus for Jazz Album of the Year and Album of the Year. Borges also won a Hoku for best male vocalist.

Borges also received the Moe Keale "Aloha Is" Award for Community Service. Kauai musician Paul Togioka received the Ki Ho'alu Foundation Legacy Award.

The 80-year-old Borges was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer last year. He did not attend the ceremony at the Hawaii Convention Center but attendees were told he was watching at home. His daughter Stephanie Borges and wife Vicki Bergeron Borges accepted on his behalf.

Chad Takatsugi was another big winner with four Hoku awards, including the liner notes award for his first solo album, "Ahuwale." He also won with Kahikina De Silva as composers for the Haku Mele Award for best song or chant primarily in the Hawaiian language, as well as the Hawaiian Language Performance Award and Hawaiian Music Album of the Year.
