KANEOHE, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Around 6 a.m. Saturday morning the Honolulu fire department airlifted two hikers from the Haiku Stairs trail after the hikers spent the night along the Koolau mountainside.
Fire crews responded to the call of hikers in distress just before 8 p.m. Friday night and were able to locate them, but could not rescue them due to diminishing daylight and unsafe weather conditions.
The hikers were instructed to hunker down and to await rescue personnel the following morning.
No injuries were reported.
As a safety precaution fire officials say hikers should consider the weather, trail, time of day and one's capabilities before planning a hike.
