KEAAU, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The driver of a van that struck and killed a 78-year-old at the Keeau rubbish transfer station last Friday has been arrested for driving under the influence and first-degree negligent homicide.

The victim was identified as Gary Ambrose, of Puna.

Police said he was dumping his trash at the station when he was hit by 66-year-old Perla Whitehawk-Taylor''s van as she was backing up.

Rescuers said Ambrose suffered severe injuries when he was pinned to a Dumpster chute. He died at the scene.

Whitehawk-Taylor was so sickened by what happened she was taken to the hospital.

She was later arrested on suspicion of negligent homicide and driving under the influence.
