HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - There are pie charts that come from the Hawaii Department of Agriculture that shows the division of local farming 35 years ago in 1980 as compared to 2015.
There was four times the papaya in 1980, seven times the sugar acreage and 10 times the pineapple. But by 2015, there were 50% more macadamia nuts, more tropical fruit cultivations, and, of course, the big new industries, seed production and commercial forestry.
Pie charts are a great way to show shares, but one weakness of them are they can be misleading about how big or small the pie is. Total acreage today is half of what it was in 1980.
