A UH Manoa Professor was honored by an international dignitary on Monday.

Dennis Masaaki Ogawa received a medal from the Japanese Consul General, Yasushi Misawa for his work in Japanese studies across the US.

It's the highest honor a Japanese dignitary can bestow on a person.

"Any award that I receive is because I have learned so much from my own students," Ogawa said. "UH is a great university because UH has great students. And the students are very involved, also in turn Japanese US relations so I am very proud of that."

Ogawa has been teaching at the University of Hawaii for nearly 50 years. Only three other Americans were given this award: Director Clint Eastwood, former LA Dodgers executive Peter O'Malley and Japanese translator Edward Seidensticker.
