HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Youth ages 12 to 17 took an opportunity to learn more about a career in ocean safety on Saturday as they signed up for the Junior Lifeguard Program at Ala Moana Beach Park.

The project teaches participants valuable skills to help save lives in ocean waters.

"We teach all the kids the same first aid and rescue techniques that we do on the beach and we do a lot of relay races, working out, and just really really a fun positive program that's a great stepping stone for kids who want to become full time lifeguards eventually," said Bryan Phillips of the Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division.

The one-week training courses will take place on Oahu beaches next month.
