KAHALA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

After nearly eight hours of battling a brush fire that sparked on Waialae Nui ridge above Kahala Mall, fire crews contained the blaze Wednesday evening, but it flared up again Thursday afternoon.

The first calls for the blaze came in shortly after 2 p.m. Wednesday from residents who could see a plume of smoke in a grassy area, not far from homes.

"It is quite scary because there is a lot of dry grass this year. The wind kept shifting end it did come up to I'd say within 40 yards of the property back here The fire department fortunately was here and were able to keep it contained from coming up onto the property," said Jon Ogata, a nearby resident.

The fire scorched about three to five acres on Wednesday before it was brought under control. At 2:45 p.m. Thursday, ten fire companies were called back to the scene.

No structures are threatened.
