HANA, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Hana Bay was forced to close after a 51-foot sailboat leaked fuel into waters off Maui Sunday afternoon, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources said.

The boat washed up on the rocks at the bottom of Keawa Place, according to the DLNR. The owner, 35-year-old Devin Coverdale from Canada, was not on board at the time. He remains on site collecting debris from the boat as it washes ashore

It’s not clear how the boat broke free.

There was about 100 gallons of diesel fuel on board.

Maui boating staff will assess the remaining larger boat sections and debris field for further clean up by a salvage company.

Hana Bay was reopened by noon on Monday.
