HANA, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Heavy rain closed portions of the Hana Highway and left parts of Hana flooded through much of Sunday.

The National Weather Service had posted Flood Advisories for most of the day, and a Flash Flood Warning was also in effect Sunday afternoon for parts of windward East Maui, but they were allowed to expire as rain began to subside.

Earlier, emergency management officials and Maui police reported flooding in Hana along Ulaino Road and Waikoloa Road, along with a continued closure of the Hana Highway near mile marker 22 between Nahiku and Keanae. The flooding was produced by persistent moderate showers falling on the saturated slopes of East Maui.

Flooding also caused problems along other stretches of the Hana Highway. Police said between mileposts 16.5 and 17, several boulders fell from the hillside and blocked one lane of the highway. Downed trees were reported on the roadway near milepost 14.5. The highway was being contraflowed in both areas as state highway crews worked to clear the debris.

Additional rain is expected for the next day or two in the area as a dissipating cold front remains stalled over the islands.
