KAHULUI, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - The 69-year-old man who allegedly hacked his ex-wife to death with a machete and then fatally shot himself in Kahului on Thursday was described as a "sweet man" who largely kept to himself.
The gruesome crime happened about 9:45 a.m. A neighbor called police after hearing a single gunshot.
When officers arrived at 49 Akalei Pl., they found Dominador Basuel's body outside the home with a gunshot wound to the head.
Inside the home, they found Leticia Basuel. She was pronounced dead where she was found, on the kitchen floor.
Family and friends said the couple kept to themselves and they never publicly yelled or fought with each other.
"If they did, none of us knew, they kept it to themselves," said their niece, Rowena Sagaysay.
Sagaysay said she and her other family members can't find the words to explain how they feel.
"Right now, nothing, it's just blank right now, just speechless," she said. "I can't even. I don't know how to even put it. My uncle was a very sweet, very sweet man, and for him to do what he did, there has to be a reason why."
Neighbor Vicky Abalos said she didn't hear the gunshot, but did hear the pair's son crying and yelling after finding his parents' bodies.
"The son, he opened the door, he saw they are dead already. That's why he was yelling and jumping and crying," she said.
"I'm very sad, we were crying too. Everybody was crying."
Abalos said she hadn't heard any fighting or yelling from that home in the 36 years she had been neighbors and friends with the pair.
"They are good husband and wife," she said. "We never heard them fighting since 1980."
Court documents show the couple divorced in December.
