WAILEA, Maui (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 49-year-old man is hospitalized after suffering lacerations to his shoulder from a possible shark attack, Maui afternoon.
The incident happened about 3:50 p.m., while the man was on a floatation device about 30 yards off the north end of Wailea Beach, fronting the grand Wailea.
Police said the injury was not life-threatening.
Maui Fire Department and Ocean Safety responded before taking him to Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment.
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources said the bite mark on the raft measured about 16 inches across. A DOCARE officer will speak with the victim and obtain photos of bite marks to determine if they are consistent with a shark bite.
The state has closed beaches in the area, and crews will reevaluate the situation in the morning to determine whether the beaches should be reopened.
