Rescue crews airlift woman from King's Trail in Makena

MAKENA, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 66-year-old Kihei woman was airlifted from King's Trail near La Perouse Bay in Makena, Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters responded to a call at 4:39 p.m. of a female hiker on the trail that was feeling ill and could not walk out on her own. A ladder crew from Wailea and a rescue crew from Kahului onboard Air 1 responded to the area to search for the woman.

She was located by 5:18 p.m. in a lava field about a mile from the trail head then airlifted back to the parking lot at La Perouse Bay where she was checked out by paramedics. The woman was then taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center for further treatment.

The woman was considered an avid and very experience hiker and had enough food and water to make the roughly four mile round trip hike to the Kanaio area. She decided to call her friend for help when she suddenly became extremely ill on her way back and was unable to continue along the trail.
