KANEOHE, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A hiker who was reported missing while on the off-limits Waihee Falls trail walked out on his own Tuesday morning.
The man -- who identified himself to reporters as John, a 35-year-old from Long Island, New York -- was initially reported missing on Monday evening.
The Honolulu Fire Department said John got separated from another hiker he was with around 5:45 p.m. That hiker made his way down and gathered a small group to go and look for him. However, efforts were not successful.
They came down off of the trail and contacted HFD for help at around 10 p.m.
Fire crews searched on the ground and in the air but could not locate him.
The search was suspended and crews were to resume their search at first light, but John made it out safely on his own around 6 a.m.
As he walked out of the trail and through the fence, he told reporters he and his friend reached Hamama Falls and were returning to the trailhead before they got separated.
The trail off Waihee Road leads to Hamama and Waihee Falls and remains off limits, yet many people continue to hike this popular trail on a daily basis.
