HUGS is a local non-profit that helps families of seriously ill children. From financial to emotional support, the executive director Joan Naguwa said that the needs of Hawaii families are unique. Often, sick kids and their parents have to travel to a neighbor island or to the mainland to get treatment. Throw in all the medical bills and the costs can be astronomical.
Naguwa said that HUGS really depends on the local community for donations, because they don't get any support from a bigger agency on the mainland. One person who has been a big supporter is former University of Hawaii coach June Jones. Naguwa said that he walked into their office 15 year ago to ask about what they did. he's been a huge help during that time. It's one of the many reasons they will honor him at their annual gala.
While this year's event is already sold out, you can still make a donation on their website hugslove.org. The event will be held on April 30, 2016 at Dole Cannery in the Pomaikai Ballroom.
