KAPOLEI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Some 19,500 gallons of sewage spilled from an abandoned wastewater pipe into Kapakaki Stream on Friday, the city Department of Environmental Services said.

Kapakahi Stream leads to West Loch.

Officials said they were able to recover about 50 gallons of wastewater from the spill, which happened at 340 Waipahu Depot Rd.

Someone spotted the spill about 4:20 a.m. Friday, but the city said it wasn't called to the scene until about 9:30 a.m.

The city blamed the spill on a faulty plug on the abandoned wastewater pipe.  Crews have posted warning signs, and alerted the state Health Department.
