NANAKULI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - More than 30 firefighters rushed to an apartment complex in Nanakuli late Wednesday to extinguish a two-alarm fire.
According to the Honolulu Fire Department, the first unit arrived around 11:40 p.m. to find the Garden Grove Apartment complex with smoke and flames coming from a back patio. Crews managed to get the fire under control by 11:50 p.m. and fully extinguish it by 12:15 a.m.
No one was in the unit at the time and no working smoke alarms were present, HFD said. However, occupants of the four-unit building were alerted to the fire by the sound of breaking glass and the smell of smoke. All building occupants managed to evacuate uninjured.
The fire displaced eight people from two of the building's units. They will be staying with family and friends, HFD said.
The fire damage – which was contained to the ground floor patio area – is estimated at more than $43,000.
The cause is still under investigation.
