HAIKU, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A visitor from China was taken to the hospital in critical condition after she was found submerged in a pond in Haiku on Sunday, the Maui Fire Department said.
Firefighters initially responded to a person reported missing in the Twin Falls area around 2:50 p.m. By the time they arrived, bystanders were performing cardio pulmonary resuscitation on the 21-year-old, who was unresponsive and without a pulse.
Emergency personnel then took over and carried the woman back to Hana Highway after she regained consciousness. She was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.
Officials said the woman was swimming in the pond with her husband before the incident happened.
