HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Cal Poly scored the go-ahead run in the 8th inning on a mishandled throw by catcher Kekai Rios, and the Mustangs topped Hawaii, 5-4, at Les Murakami Stadium on Saturday.
After trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth, first baseman Eric Ramirez split a shot to shallow center, scoring Jacob Sheldon-Collins from second as the throw from the outfield was cut off at second base.
The teams were tied headed into the eighth, when Kyle Marinconz (4-5, 2R, 2RBI) singled into center to send Brett Binning toward home. Centerfielder Matt LoCoco made the throw home in time, but it was mishandled by Rios, who failed to tag the runner in time.
The run proved to be the difference, as Hawaii lost 5-4.
The teams will finish the season series on Sunday afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium.
