No tsunami threat following 6.6 quake near Vanuatu

A strong earthquake shook an area near Vanuatu on Thursday, but it was not strong enough to generate a tsunami threat to the area or to Hawaii.

The quake was measured at a magnitude 6.6, according to preliminary reports from the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake happened shortly before 12 p.m. HST northwest of Port-Olry, Vanuatu at a depth of 10 km, according to the USGS.
