HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A powerful earthquake struck southern Japan, but there was no tsunami threat to the country or to Hawaii, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the temblor, which had a preliminary magnitude of 6.2, happened Thursday around 2:30 a.m. HST near the Kumamoto prefecture, where police said they received reports of numerous collapsed houses and people possibly trapped inside.

An aftershock, measuring 5.7, later struck the country, but no tsunami threats were reported from that quake.
