HONOLULU (AP) - The Hawaii Legislature is passing dozens of bills ahead of a major deadline, making decisions on a variety of issues including smoking in cars and drug overdoses.

A proposal passed in the House Tuesday would fund air conditioning for Hawaii's public schools.

Another bill passed by the House would allow Hawaii women to get up to a year of birth control at a time. A bill to criminalize trespassing on state lands also passed in the House, over the objections of homeless advocates.

Money would be set aside to test at least 500 untested sex assault evidence kits under a bill passed in the Senate.

A company diverting water in East Maui would be able to continue to do so despite strong opposition from farmers under another Senate bill.
