HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - State Sen. Sam Slom will undergo coronary bypass surgery this week.
Slom, the Senate minority leader, announced the surgery Monday, and said the decision was made following a hospitalization last week.
The senator said he hopes to return to his duties at the earliest possible date.
"Although I would prefer to be present at this coming Tuesday's floor session, my doctors assure me that having this routine surgery at the earliest date ensures my ability to be present for the final vote in the best of health," Slom said, in a news release.
Slom is the lone Republican in the state Senate.
