HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - It was already going to be a big year for the halau from Kapahulu, O'ahu; Halau Na Mamo O Puuanahulu will celebrate their 30 years of being open as a hula school, teaching the dances of our Hawaiian Islands, and in essence the dances of their kupuna; but it is turning out to be much more.
We talked story with Na Kumu Hula Sonny Ching and Lopaka Igarta-De Vera on their accolades as Overall Winners at this years' Merrie Monarch Festival, which is the #1 competition and event for the world of hula. It draws thousands of spectators and hundreds of thousands to the internet broadcast every year.
Ching and Igarta-De Vera talked about the evolution of their haumana and how they as Kumu were in a different "place" this year as compared to years' past.
They will be celebrating Halau Na Mamo O Pu'uanahulu's 30th Anniversary at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, Tapa Ballrooms on Sunday April 17th from 10:00am – 3:00pm
