HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hope Young was driving in the center, town bound lane on Kalanianiole Highway Saturday morning when she saw three police cars and an HPD helicopter speed past her.
Just moments later, Young's Kia Soul was sideswiped from behind by an alleged stolen Nissan Frontier truck.
"Yeah, it's bus' up," she said. "The car came barreling through the right and middle lane of the stop traffic. He came flying through. He got stopped right in front of us."
The 16-year-old suspect was arrested at gunpoint after he had gotten stuck in traffic and had hit at least seven cars in his attempt to escape. At the time of his arrest, the truck's engine was still running.
"The officer came gun drawn and arrested him right there," Young said. "When the officer drew his gun, I was thinking please get out of the car because I didn't want to see anyone shot in front of us."
The passenger side of Young's car was dented. Other cars had even more serious damage.
No one was injured but the incident forced traffic to back up for several miles all the way to Koko Marina Center.
"There was another car he got pinned between. The lady had a baby in her car. Thankfully, nobody was hurt in that car too," Young said.
The suspect was arrested on car theft charges. Police also found illegal drugs and a replica gun on him.
"Can I just slap him? I just wanted to shake him and say what's wrong with you? You really could have hurt people. Just be thankful people are safe," Young said.
