Walk with aloha at the Honolulu AIDS Walk

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - On Sunday, April 17th 2016, Life Foundation will celebrate the 25th annual Honolulu AIDS Walk at the Kapi'olani Park Bandstand. The Honolulu AIDS Walk benefits the Life Foundation and is Hawaii's largest AIDS public awareness event, which brings the community together in the fight against AIDS to support those surviving with HIV and the ongoing search for a cure. 100% of funds raised from the AIDS Walk stay in Hawaii to help the local HIV community. This fun, free and family-friendly event opens at 8 am for walker check-in and pre-walk entertainment, warm-up and prize give-ways, and the Walk starts at 10 am. Walkers can register online at www.honoluluaidswalk.org with a team of their friends, family and co-workers, or sign up individually. All registered walkers receive the weekly walker challenges for great prizes and invitations for exclusive walker events.

Over the past 25 years, the Honolulu AIDS Walk has raised over 2.5 million dollars to help provide critical life saving services to the local community such as free island-wide HIV testing and care services for people living with HIV/AIDS on Oahu. Last year, the Honolulu AIDS Walk attracted over 4,000 participants and raised $240,000 for Life Foundation.  This year, Life Foundation is expecting 5,000 walkers and a goal to raise $300,000.  The Honolulu AIDS Walk is an easy 5k (3 mile) walk around Kapi'olani Park, and features great entertainment, a "Fighting HIV/AIDS" themed costume contest costume contest, on-stage prize give aways, a kid zone with inflatable bouncers, health fair, and food booths to keep the fun going throughout the event.

Walkers are encouraged to raise money by asking friends and family to sponsor their participation in the Honolulu AIDS Walk, but there is no fundraising minimum or registration fee to attend the event. AIDS Walk t-shirts are given as fundraising prizes to all walkers that raise at least $100 ($75 for youth walkers). Additional prizes such as bags, bracelets and travel tumblers are also given to walkers at higher fundraising levels and all walkers that raise at least $1,000 earn access to the elite VIP Walker Tent, which features free breakfast, drinks and snacks. Team Captains whose team raises at least $2,000 are entered in a drawing for a special prize. Prizes will also be given to the top fundraising corporate team, top friends & family team, the top three individual fundraisers, and the top teams and individuals participating in the "Fighting HIV/AIDS" themed costume contest (Must be a registered walker/team to qualify).

Also, finding parking and getting to the AIDS Walk is easy thanks to the FREE Honolulu AIDS Walk trolley provided by Life Foundation that will run during event hours from Kapi'olani Community College to Kapi'olani Park.

Walkers and supporters can get the fun started early by joining Life Foundation for several exciting events in March that are great opportunities to raise money for the Walk, as well as meet other Walkers. Each year 50,000 Americans become infected with HIV and a quarter of these new infections occur in individuals under the age of 25. 1 in 5 people living with HIV is unaware of their infection and every 9.5 minutes someone in the United States becomes infected with HIV.
