HONOLULU (AP) - The University of Hawaii now officially bans professors from dating their students.
The university came out with a new policy Tuesday that bans faculty from having romantic, sexual or dating relationships with students in their classes. The rules also ban advisers from having romantic relationships with their students, as well as other situations in which there is a "clear power differential."
The University of Hawaii system enrolls 57,000 students statewide on 10 different campuses. It came under fire two years ago when it was among dozens of schools nationwide that the U.S. Department of Education started investigating because of the way it handled sexual assault allegations.
In recent years, there's been a national trend among universities, including Harvard, Yale and Arizona State University, to ban professors from dating their students.
