HALAWA VALLEY, MOLOKAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Twenty hikers are safe after they were caught in flash flooding in Halawa Valley on Molokai.
The Maui Fire Department said fire crews from Pukoo, Kaunakakai and Hoolehua responded at about 3:25 p.m. Friday after there were reports of several people who were unaccounted for after the flooding. Crews from Pukoo confirmed that 20 hikers in two separate groups were missing.
The hikers told fire crews that they decided to stay put in safe locations until the water dropped back down enough for them to safely cross the river.
The groups then met with fire crews, who escorted them back down the trail to safety. No injuries were reported.
The fire department said the groups consisted of both visitors and local residents, ranging in age from 6 to 38.
