Makiki Fire Station temporarily closed for asbestos removal

MAKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Makiki Fire Station is temporarily closed to remove flooring that has asbestos.

The crew and equipment usually assigned to Makiki has been reassigned to the Central Fire Station on South Beretania Street.

In a news release, the city said an inspection found flooring at the fire station was severely damaged. As a precaution, the Honolulu Fire Department closed the station and conducted testing.

Tests did not find that asbestos had been released into the air.

The city said the flooring removal was to begin Wednesday and take about three to four weeks.
