PUUANAHULU, Big Island (HawaiiNewsNow) - A lightning strike ignited a brush fire on the Big Island that burned about 1,800 acres along Highway 190 in the Puuanahulu area, officials said.
More than 20 state and county firefighters were called to the scene at around 11:45 a.m. Wednesday where they battled the fast-spreading fire.
Due to the fire, police closed off Highway 190, between Makalei Drive to the Daniel K. Inouye Highway, while crews continued to put out the flames. Roads have since been reopened.
The fire was contained by Thursday afternoon.
