HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A six-year veteran of the police force shot and seriously wounded a burglary suspect near a Honolulu airport hotel on Wednesday.
Police were trying to arrest the suspect for burglary and several outstanding warrants when the incident happened about noon at the Pacific Marina Inn on Waiwai Loop.
The suspect has been identified as 24-year-old Carlos Salas.
Keith Horikawa, acting major of the Honolulu Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division, said Salas had a semi-automatic pistol and appeared to raise it up toward officers when he was shot.
Officers fired two rounds, and Salas was hit once.
He was taken to the Queen's Medical Center in serious but stable condition.
The weapon recovered at the scene had been stolen in a burglary in Honolulu earlier this year, Horikawa said. Police have not said whether the weapon was loaded, and if the suspect pointed it at officers.
The suspect has 18 prior arrests, and is awaiting sentencing on felony sex assault and robbery.
The officer involved in the shooting is assigned to District 5, and will be put on administrative leave as is standard procedure.
