ENTER LOCALICIOUS HAWAII'S EAT LOCAL ART AND ESSAY CONTEST
Mom always said to eat your fruits and vegetables. Now, keiki who love local produce could be rewarded for eating the rainbow.
As part of the month-long Localicious Hawai?i campaign, the Hawai?i Agricultural Foundation (HAF) and Hawai?i Gas brought back the Eat Local Art and Essay Contest for students.
This year, the contest theme is "Eat Local—My Favorite Dish Created with Locally Grown Produce." Students from kindergarten through 3rd grade will enter doodles of their dish, while students grades 4 through 6 will submit posters and a short essay, under 500 words.
The deadline to enter is March 31, 2016. Winners will receive a class party with a celebrity chef and farmer along with an Apple iPad mini. For more information, visit localicioushawaii.com/agcontest.
The contest is part of Localicious Hawai?i, a HAF promotion that raises funds for Veggie U garden kits for schools. By ordering Localicious dishes at 149 participating restaurants through March, you can help teach the next generation of growers and support Hawai?i's agricultural industry.
The Localicious dishes have one thing in common: they must use locally sourced produce, meat or seafood. Think MW Restaurant's "Seafood Flan" with Kaua?i Shrimp, Kona Abalone Flan and OK Farms Eggs, or Hula Grill's Localicious Salad featuring Nalo farm greens, Kahuku sea asparagus, sweet ?Ewa onion, hearts of palm, Ho Farms tomatoes and miso lime vinaigrette.
