WAHIAWA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The gym at George Wright Park in Wahiawa is a popular venue for youth basketball and volleyball leagues. But parents say the gym is so rundown that it poses safety hazards for users.
Many of the bleacher seats at the George Wright Park gym have broken off, leaving rows and rows no longer usable. There are dozens of cracks on the basketball floor, caused by termite damage.
"As you can see the bleachers, it's terrible. It shouldn't be like this. This gym should be closed and fixed as soon as possible," said Wahiawa resident Jon Acohido, who grew up playing in the gym and now coaches boy's basketball teams there.
"For me personally, it's very disappointing that we can't get the assistance to fix this gym for our youth."
Whitmore Village resident Charlotte Jumawan said that parts of the gym's wooden floors are warped and cracked.
"There's even some soft spots in the court. I did see some kids twist ankles," she said.
"You know a lot of leagues and a lot of activities -- basketball, volleyball -- all kind of leagues come in here and I don't think it's safe for the kids."
The city couldn't be reached for immediate comment. But in his most recent state of the city address, Mayor Kirk Caldwell said fixes to the city parks are a top priority.
Last year, the city refurbished 16 playgrounds, built ten new ones and fixed 27 bathrooms.
Many in Wahiawa are hoping those kinds of fixes will be made at their neighborhood gym soon.
