HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A male pedestrian in his 50s died Thursday after he was hit by a city bus in Chinatown, according to Honolulu police.

Police said the bus was pulling up to a stop in the eastbound direction of Hotel Street, between Nuuanu Avenue and Bethel Street, around 7:30 p.m. when the man fell into the path of the bus.

According to HPD Lt. Baron Lee, witnesses "heard what appeared to be a sneeze or sneezes and so that's what drew their attention to the male, and they looked back, and just as they looked back, they saw him appear to stagger or fall or stumble into the path of the bus."

Police said the pedestrian suffered head and internal injuries. His identity has not yet been released pending an autopsy.

Both directions of Hotel Street were shut down in the area following the crash.

Speed does not appear to be a factor, but it's not clear if alcohol or drugs were involved.

Police will continue to investigate.
