'Iolani's Hogland wins state Gatorade POY award

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – An ‘Iolani high school basketball standout has been named the 2015-2016 Gatorade Hawaii Boys Basketball Player of the Year.

Junior forward Hugh Hogland, winner of the Hawaii award, was also announced as a finalist for the national award, sponsored by Gatorade and USA TODAY High School Sports.

The national award will be announced in March.

The six-foot-nine center was a major player for the Raiders; he led the team to a Division 1 HHSAA state championship this season, averaging 15 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 blocks per game.

Hogland also mentors young science students and volunteers during beach clean-up efforts, all while maintaining a 3.08 GPA in the classroom.

He is the eighth winner of the award who hails from ‘Iolani.
