HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - He's still recovering from surgery, but Cyril Pahinui is now conscious and in good spirits thanks to some great help.
He responded to a mini "kanikapila" in his hospital room at the Queen's Medical Center. Pahinui's family says he turned his head and opened his eyes when he heard his father Gabby's famous song "Hiilawe" being played. He was tapping his fingers and even tried to sing with the breathing tube still in his mouth.
During the kanikapila, he would point to someone to take a solo, asked for a piece of paper and wrote, "Thank You" on it. Doctors were very surprised, but his family was not as surprised because they say they know the power of Hawaiian music.
He still has a long road ahead, but his family is hoping he'll be well enough to attend the event he's organized: the Gabby Pahinui Waimanalo Kanikapila, which takes place April 23rd in Waimanalo.
