Rainbow Wahine return to Manoa trophy in hand

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Rainbow Wahine returned to Manoa Sunday morning with both the Big West Tournament trophy and an invitation to the big dance.

With their 78-59 win over UC Davis on Saturday, Laura Beeman's squad earned an automatic bid the NCAA tournament. It'll be the sixth appearance and the first since 1998 for the Rainbow Wahine.

Just one year after coming up short in the Big West tournament championship game, the 'bows peaked at exactly the right moment this time around, according to Beeman.

"I couldn't be more proud of this group of young ladies. They came out and played, played their hearts out, hit their stride on Friday and Saturday, and neither game was close. It's just a testament to their buying into this program even more" said the Rainbow Wahine head coach.

For the last three consecutive seasons the University of Hawaii Women's basketball team has been relegated to competing for a WNIT title. With a national championship title on the line this time around, senior, Destiny King, says the team is competing for much more than themselves.

"We want to represent the [Big West Conference], and our state, and our school, we want to shock the world this year, that's something we've been wanting to do for a long time." said King.

This season marks the first time both the University of Hawaii Men's and Women's teams are heading to the big dance since 1994.
