LAHAINA, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Maui firefighters battled an early-morning brush fire Friday along Honoapiilani Highway, shutting down a stretch of the road for about an hour.
The Maui Fire Department said firefighters responded to reports of a brush fire near mile post 17 of Honoapiilani Highway, between the Olowalu dump and Kai Hele Ku-Launiupoko.
When they arrived, firefighters discovered a brush fire in light grassy fuels with a mix of Kiawe trees on the mauka side of the highway. Officials said additional crews were requested because the fire was spreading fast due to strong winds.
By 7:30 a.m., firefighters managed to fully contain the fire that burned about 8 acres. However, they are still on scene trying to extinguish hot spots.
No injuries were reported and no structures were damaged.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
