McKinley High School is named after 35th President of the United States, William McKinley. He is also the person who signed "Treaty of Annexation" in 1898 that was passed by a joint ratification of Congress, annexing the Hawaiian Islands to the United States of America.
There have been some that have petitioned against the name of the school and have asked for a name change back to it's name before that, Honolulu School (changed in 1907).
In 2015; President Obama announced that the name of Mount McKinley would be changed to Mount Denali (actually done by Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell); its indigenous name.
Some are disappointed that McKinley High School is named after the person that was responsible for the completion of the overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy.
McKinley's principal says to change the schools' name would be a slight to generations of graduates.
