MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Resarchers using a drone have captured video of humpback whales doing something unique in Hawaiian waters.

Video shows a mother humpback off Maui's Leeward coast, looking like she's doingn a headstand and drifting with her tail out of the water. Scientists call this position "tail-sailing". Researchers think these underwater headstands could be a way for whales to rest, nurse or just stay cool.

Tail-sailing is fairly common among southern right whales, but scientists say it is rarely seen and documented among humpbacks.

Right now is the peak season for Humpback Whales in the islands. It lasts through May.
