HAWAII KAI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The future of Maunalua Bay will be the topic of discussion at a community forum Thursday night.
State lawmakers and the lead author of the Hanauma Bay master plan will facilitate the meeting in which they will seek input about the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's controversial expansion plan.
NOAA wants to make the bay a "Special Sanctuary Management Area," which means more protections for humpback whales and other marine life. However, opponents fear the bay may not be as user-friendly. Business owners also say hundreds of jobs could be lost.
The meeting will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at JAIMS located at 6660 Hawaii Kai Drive.
