HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - University of California junior second baseman Kylie Reed hit a two-run double in the fifth inning, and the visiting Bears outlasted the Rainbow Wahine, 3-2, at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
The teams traded scoreless innings to open the game before centerfielder Ulu Matagiese hit a solo home run on the first pitch she saw to give Hawaii a 1-0 lead. Matagiese finished 2-3, with a run and 1 RBI.
Hawaii pitcher Jennifer Iseri held Cal scoreless until the top of the fourth, when a single from Kobie Pettis scored Jazmyn Jackson to tie the game. Cal scored added the two aforementioned runs in the fifth inning to give the Bears a 3-1 lead.
A seventh-inning run from Breanna Ojala closed the margin for Hawaii, but the 'Bows got no closer than 3-2 on the evening.
The Wahine will take on Baylor tomorrow at 6 p.m. for day two of the Outrigger Resorts Spring Fling Tournament.
