Hawaii Island police investigating shooting in Kapoho

PUNA, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Hawaii Island police have arrested a 72-year-old man following a fatal shooting that happened just after 5:00 p.m. Monday in Kapoho.

Richard Edwards, of Kapoho, was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder.

Sources say the alleged shooter was the one who called 911 to report the crime.

The victim, identified as 56-year-old Bryan Lynn Thomas of Kapoho, was reportedly found face down in a driveway on Kumukahi Road. The Medical Examiner's Office determined that Thomas died of gunshot wounds to the abdomen and chest. 

Sources say the shooter used a 12-gauge shot gun.

A Hawaii News Now crew at the scene saw police taking a man into custody and out of the gated community.
