HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Rainbow Warrior basketball team will share it's regular season Big West championship with the Anteaters of U.C. Irvine.
Needing a win to secure their first outright conference victory in more than a decade, the 'Bows fell to Long Beach State, 74-72, at the Walter Pyramid on Saturday. Unbeaten in the conference against all other opponents, LBSU won their second game against Hawaii to sweep the season series, handing the Rainbow Warriors their fifth loss of the season.
Junior swingman Aaron Valdes scored 19 points to pace Hawaii, including 5 of 8 shooting from beyond the 3 point line. Stefan Jankovic notched 14 boards for the 'Bows, but was just 2-8 from the field in the contest.
Hawaii will open the Big West conference tournament against 8th-seeded Cal State Fullerton on Thursday. The winner of the tournament nets an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
