KANEOHE, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A tragic boating mishap claimed the life of an active duty Marine while fishing with a civilian and another military member when their vessel suddently capsized.
The three men were fishing off the North beach of Marine Corps Base Hawaii at about 10 p.m. on Friday when a rogue wave overturned their 17-foot Boston Whaler.
After their vessel overturned, they became separated. Two of the men were able to swim to shore and call for help.
The Coast Guard was notified at about 2 a.m. and responded with a helicopter crew and a response boat. Personnel from the base and the Honolulu Fire Department also responded.
The victim was later retrieved at 8.25 a.m by rescue personnel in 30 feet of water. He was unconscious, not breathing and had no pulse.
Authorities have not yet released the name of the victim. An autopsy is set for Monday.
