KEKAHA, Kauai (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 23-year-old Koloa woman died in a two-car crash on Kaumualii Highway in Kekaha, Saturday afternoon. The woman was a passenger in a Honda Civic driven by a 25-year-old Kekaha man.
The Honda was eastbound on the highway near the entrance to Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor at approximately 3:20 p.m. when a westbound green sedan turned left in front of the Honda into the roadway leading to the harbor. The driver of the Ranger, a 55-year-old Kekaha woman, sustained minor injuries and was released at the scene. There were no passengers in the pick-up truck.
Speed is believed to be a factor in this crash.
This is Kauai's first traffic fatality for 2016.
The highway was closed for approximately 4-1/2 hours following the crash to allow police to conduct their investigation. Motorists were able to utilize Waimea Canyon Drive as an alternate route to get to their destinations.
